CHAPLO
PHOTOGRAPHY IS NOW ALL DIGITAL!
We now use two $8K digital camera bodies and architectural optics for our
architectural photography assignments. As a photographer and long time
film user, I have to say the the look of the images is beautiful and we
can print them as large as 24x36" with true photo resolution.
CHAPLO
ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY CLIENTS ARE WINNING AWARDS
During the past year, our architectural/engineering/construction clients
have won seven (7) "best" awards for their AEC projects using
Paul Chaplo as their sole photographer for their architectural
photography. We have photographed in eight states during the last 6
months. Its time to plan ahead for your award submissions and get the
photography that you need from Paul Chaplo!

CHAPLO
PUBLISHED IN SHELTER MAGAZINE AND PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY TRADE JOURNAL:
Paul Chaplo was recently cited in the Sept. issue of Studio
Photography and Design, a Cygnus publication. A high profile 4x5
manufacturer referred the editor to Paul for expert input regarding the
currently state of 4x5 large format film and digital photography. Paul was
honored to appear on the same page as John Sexton, a well-known large
format fine art landscape photographer who work Paul has long admired.
Paul earned his Master of Fine Arts degree in Fine Art Photography, and
his work has been widely exhibited.
Also, Paul's work has been published again -- this time in a high quality
shelter magazine. We are currently making arrangements to link to a PDF
file of the ~5 pages of images that were reproduced with excellent offset
printing. The 4x5 color images of a Dallas residence were photographed in
tungsten light on transparency film and looked great in print!

NEED
PEOPLE SHOTS?: INTRODUCING OUR
EXECUTIVE PORTRAITURE SERVICE:
We have expanded our services to include
portraiture due to demand for publication-quality executive portrait photography. We like to make the distinction that these are lit in a
"corporate" and "editorial" style which gives a look
that fits applications like annual reports, advertising, and magazine
covers. We work within the contrast range of your printer -- so the image
will look great in print!

OREGON
ASSIGNMENT: THE STORY BEHIND THE IMAGES:
Also, we just returned from a successful
photo assignment to Oregon, where we photographed a massive construction
project with tremendous success. We utilized our latest addition to our 4x5 offerings -- our new Schneider
150mm Super-Symmar XL. Paul has Schneider blood in his family -- so we keep
teasing him that it's a genetic disposition!

PHOTOGRAPHER FOR THE DALLAS AREA:
We
now fly aerial photography missions over the DFW metro area.

Helicopters are our preferred camera platform for oblique aerial
photography. |
We
fly aerial photography missions over Dallas and
Fort Worth, TX, and all of Texas. FAA flight restrictions have been lifted at the
time of writing, and so we are preparing for several aerial photography
missions. We highly recommend medium format (6x7 cm) for aerials as the image
quality is excellent, yet the cameras handle well in the air. Also, if you need
the unique quality of 4x5 aerials, let us know!
This is a great time of the year to photograph aerials. And yes, we do fly with the chopper door off!
(Note: Paul Chaplo was
raised in a U.S.A.F.- fighter pilot family and grew up in & around aircraft!)

ADDS POOL AND PATIO PAGE

Looking for residential
architectural photography? We have just completed scans to
show more of our pool and patio work, especially installations of
lattices, pool enclosures, patio covers, sunrooms, conservatories,
and other metal and steel shade structures. These products are
visually interesting, and we had productive sessions thank to a
great client and some great desert light. The primary format was 4x5
color transparency. The natural sunlight created interesting
zebra like shadows alternating with stripes of bright sunlight. How
did we handle this interesting lighting situation?

CHAPLO
IS AIA AFFILIATED, AND SEEKING BOOK PROJECTS
It's great to be accepted by, and
affiliated with the AIA, TSA, and DAIA. We support these prominent
professional organizations at the national, state, and local chapter
level.
In
addition to our ongoing work for AIA Architect-Members, we are now seeking
architectural book illustration assignments,
especially those focusing on practice and history in Dallas and Fort
Worth, Texas. We are looking for authors and publishers who need original
architectural and aerial photography to illustrate books. Please contact
us
if you have a publication planned. We would love to be on your team.
Also, we are continuing our design competition photography, which is
always exciting.
We have a definite vicarious "win" experience when your
projects win an award, supported by our photography. We encourage
you to plan ahead for photography!
In addition, if
you have a project or publication that you are doing for
the AIA, TSA. or DAIA, please let us know how we can
help. We would love to contribute to your project if it will will serve the
membership and the architect profession.
I just finished writing a white paper titled "How to Select an
Architectural Photographer," as a service to D.A.I.A and T.S.A.
Architect-Members. It can be accessed here.

CHAPLO CHOSEN FOR
ALL-STAR TEAM BY CROCKETT & CO:
Paul Chaplo recently completed Will Cockett's legendary "4-Day
Real Life Commercial Photography" in Raleigh, N.C. as part of
the East Coast School Photographic Workshop sponsored by
Professional Photographers of N.C. and PPA. After 4 days of
intensive instruction and grueling assignments under worse than real
life time constraints, Paul was chosen as one of the 5 all-stars
from the class of 35 participants. The workshop covered advanced
color correction, location portraiture lighting techniques, product
photography, and professional digital photography.

Paul Chaplo now provides complete corporate photographic services,
including
corporate style portraiture with on-location strobe lighting. We can
set-up our portable studio quickly at your location, photograph your key
people, and be gone before you next important meeting.
We photograph portraits
using color-corrected strobe lighting that results in publication-quality
images suitable for magazines, annual reports, and other
publications.
One of our strengths is the ability to shoot color transparency film under
fluorescent lights that are common in many offices. Paul Chaplo uses a
sophisticated color meter and filtration system to achieve wonderful skin
tones -- even under those fixtures that make people look green in other
photographer's images!

Texas A&M recently built a new $30 million Science at Tarleton State
University. Paul Chaplo was commissioned to create architectural
photographs of the unique copper dome that houses the planetarium. We met
with the architects and suggested that the session take place while the
copper still had its metallic lustre. The architects agreed and the
resulting images have been a tremendous success. As icing on the cake,
Texas A&M - Tarleton University selected two of the images for both
the front and back covers of the Alumni J-Tac. The high quality 4-color
printing captured our vision. The university reports many positive
responses to the cover. (Front Cover shown; reproduced courtesy of TSU
Alumni Relations -- thank you!)

OREGON
ASSIGNMENT: A Case Study in Commitment.
We were
selected to photography massive steel dairy projects in Oregon.
When we arrived, stormy wx moved in, but we were determined to get
the shot.
Before sunrise, we were on site, and selected a view and angle that
stood out.
We set up our Bogen 3036 tripod in the rain when everybody thought
we were crazy.
We loaded our 4x5 in the rental car. And waited, drinking our
coffee. The sky was dark with storm clouds. Then, the sun broke
through, and lit up 2000 ft. of galvanized steel building. A rainbow
appeared behind the project, in the frame! We had 5 minutes of sun,
and managed to shoot three 4x5's sheets of film in that short time!

Original:
4x5 transparency Final print: 24x30 -inches.
Another view: clear weather and steel, Oregon.
That
image (shown at left) became the client's favorite, and now is the
central photograph in their corporate headquarters' reception area.
Chaplo goes above and beyond to get the shot. We are not afraid to
get in the dirt, mud, or air. If you can see it, we can shoot it.
FIELD
TESTING THE GOSSEN STARLITE EXPOSURE METER:
We are putting the meters through the ringer on our locations
assignments. The latest survivor is the Gossen Starlite, which is a digital
combination ambient/flash meter that takes both reflective and
incident measurements. We have used the Sekonic
L-508 and L-608,
which are both excellent. Unfortunately, the L-608 we tried had
major accuracy problems (off by 7/10's of an f-stop in opposite
directions for flash and ambient). This may not be a representative
example, unfortunately, it is what we encountered. We did see
several examples of Sekonic meters needing correction due to meter
error during the workshop (including our own Sekonic incident meter,
which was off by +.4 for ambient). Our Minolta flashmeter was off by
+.3 for ambient and -.3 for flash; an error that makes it
unacceptable for our precise location work when combining flash and
ambient light.
In evaluating the
Gossen Starlight, we have found it to be superior in terms of
accuracy. During a pro photography workshop (see above), the gentleman who
is in charge of film testing for Fuji USA, calibrated our
other meters. In comparing the Starlight to our calibrated Minolta, we
have found that the Starlight to be precise. In fact, it was EXACT
WITHOUT HAVING TO USE ANY COMPENSATION. We are picky about exposure
accuracy and our current preference is currently to use the Gossen
for that factor alone. The Sekonic does have more bells and whistles
-- our decision is a matter of choosing accuracy first, which is
paramount in our work! We also use the Gossen Pro 3F Color Meter for its
facility to accept alternative neutral rendering points (tested
color temperatures that look neutral for skin tones shot on
individual films; credit: Will Crockett for NRP's -- thanks for
sharing your results,
Will!)
